In the past year, especially since the Israel-Hamas conflict began in October 2023, there have been significant attacks that affected Christian sites in Gaza, and now Lebanon.

On October 19, 2023, an Israeli airstrike hit the Church of Saint Porphyrius in Gaza City, one of the oldest churches in the world. This strike, which occurred while about 500 people were sheltering there, resulted in the deaths of 18 civilians and left many others injured.

Additionally, the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital, run by the Anglican Church, was struck on October 17, 2023, during an explosion that killed between 200 and 500 people. This hospital, a Christian-run institution, was housing displaced civilians at the time.

These attacks are part of a larger pattern of violence affecting religious sites, with numerous churches and mosques being damaged or destroyed during this ongoing conflict.

In the past year, particularly following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, 2023, Gaza has experienced numerous bombings and high casualty events. Here is a timeline of some of the major incidents:

October 7, 2023 – Hamas launched an attack on Israel, prompting Israel to retaliate with widespread airstrikes in Gaza. Thousands of civilians were killed in the initial bombardments.

October 17, 2023 – An explosion at the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital killed an estimated 200-500 people. Both Israel and Hamas accused each other of responsibility.

October 19, 2023 – The Church of Saint Porphyrius in Gaza City, a shelter for civilians, was hit by an Israeli airstrike, killing at least 18 people.

Late October 2023 – By the end of the month, over 8,000 Palestinians had been reported dead due to Israeli airstrikes, according to Palestinian authorities.

November 2023 - January 2024 – The bombings continued, particularly targeting northern Gaza and civilian infrastructure. The death toll surpassed 20,000 by the end of December.

April 2024 – Intense bombardment caused severe destruction across Gaza, with estimates showing over 30,000 Palestinians had died since the war began.

These events reflect the devastating scale of the conflict, with mass casualties reported in hospitals, refugee camps, and shelters

These Christians have deep attachments to their ancient churches and cemeteries, and the land on which their families have lived since the first century — when their ancestors were among Jesus’s first disciples. And the IDF seems determined to drive them out. Unlike their Muslim neighbors, these Christians have nowhere else to go. - Jason Jones, Founder of the Vulnerable People Project
